New Research: Antidepressants Can Cause Long-Term Depression
(first published on Huffington Post)
by Peter R. Breggin, MD
Shortly after Prozac became the best-selling drug in the world in the early 1990s. I proposed that there was little or no evidence for efficacy, but considerable evidence that the drug would worsen depression and cause severe behavioral abnormalities. I attributed much of the problem to "compensatory changes" in neurotransmitters as the brain resists the drug effect. Since then, in a series of books and articles, I've documented antidepressant-induced clinical worsening and some of its underlying physical causes. Now the idea has gained ground in the broader research community and has recently been named "tardive dysphoria."

Vaccinated Children Two And A Half Times More Likely To Have Neurological Disorders Like ADHD And Autism, New Survey In California And Oregon Finds.
As the first trial in Vaccine Court explores the relationship between vaccines and autism, a new survey released today indicates a strong correlation between rates of neurological disorders, such as ADHD and autism, and childhood vaccinations.
For older vaccinated boys in the 11-17 age bracket, the results were even more pronounced. Vaccinated boys were 158% more likely to have a neurological disorder, 317% more likely to have ADHD, and 112% more likely to have autism. Complete survey results are available at http://www.GenerationRescue.org.
More than 759 preschoolers were prescribed anti-psychotic drugs last year and use of these medications in children aged under six has leapt 43 per cent in the past three years.
Figures released by the Department of Health and Ageing show a further 3481 children aged seven to 11 are using the powerful medications, even though psychosis does not usually develop until late adolescence.

New Look To ADHD Committee
Open book approach a good start for the New National ADHD Guidelines Committee
Today (Wednesday 11 July 2011) Mental Health Minister Mark Butler announced the membership of the committee responsible for developing new Australian guidelines on ADHD. Of the ten members invited to participate, two have significant conflicts of interest that should preclude their involvement.
However, this compares very favorably to previous ADHD guideline development processes which have been dominated by pharmaceutical company allies who have relied on commercially compromised research.
It is also, for the first time, an open process. We know from the start who is developing the guidelines and the details of their conflict of interest declaration. Gillard Government Mental Health Minister Mark Butler deserves credit for this. Let us hope this creates a precedent for future commonwealth government medical guidelines and advisory committee processes.

THE MENTAL HEALTH ACT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN REVIEWED. THE NEW BILL HAS BEEN PASSED BY BOTH HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT. NONE OF THE AMENDMENTS MADE INCLUDED THE BANNING OF INVOLUNTARY TREATMENT OF CHILDREN WITHOUT PARENTAL CONSENT . THE USE OF ELECTROSHOCK, RESTRAINT AND SECLUSION IN CHILDREN REMAIN LEGAL. PLEASE TAKE ACTION TO EDUCATE OTHERS AND HELP FORCE IN AMENDMENTS FOR THE FUTURE.
INVOLUNTARY TREATMENT OF CHILDREN: The new bill allows for a child to be involuntarily detained in a hospital – meaning they are detained by law and parents cannot take them home if the psychiatrist says no. A psychiatrist could give the child any treatment they considers necessary and this could include: electro-shock; forced administration of drugs; seclusion, use of dangerous drugs known to cause death, suicidal behaviour, heart problems & hallucinations in children. Parents could have no say whatsoever in the treatment, including the child being placed on a legal order to continue to receive drugs at home. Read Article.
